Root-Cause & Secure-Code Remediation: CVE-2026-29058
Fix CVE-2026-29058 at the source. Read the vulnerable AVideo encoder code, trace untrusted input from the request parameter to the OS-command sink, reject a tempting but insufficient blacklist/escapeshellcmd fix, then deploy and prove the correct remediation: allow-list validation plus shell-free execution. Audit and re-scan to verify, and write the pull request.
Skills you will practice
- Source-level root-cause analysis
- Taint / data-flow tracing
- CWE-78 remediation
- Static code review (SAST)
- Allow-list input validation
- Shell-free command execution
- Secure-coding review and pull requests

The scenario
Triage fixed the symptom by upgrading; detection and IR handled the incident. Now you are the application security engineer who has to understand *why* the code was exploitable and ship a correct fix. Start at the source.
What you will do
- Understand the root cause4 steps
Open the encoder source · Read the root-cause note · Read the vulnerable function · Identify the sink
- Trace the data flow and audit4 steps
Trace source to sink · What is the untrusted source? · Does base64-decoding sanitize it? · Audit the vulnerable file
- Reject the insufficient fix4 steps
Read the proposed fix · Audit the proposed fix · Why is this fix insufficient? · Read the correct fix
- Apply and prove the secure fix5 steps
Audit the secure implementation · What makes it safe? · Deploy the fix · Add the allow-list configuration · …
- Release and verify on the host4 steps
Set the fixed release version · Verify on the host · Defence in depth · If you had only blacklisted?
- Document the fix2 steps
Write the pull-request note · The secure-coding principle
How this lab works
A real Linux-style console. Commands run against real files, so hashes, hex dumps and comparisons give real results.
A file browser where you can place evidence into the lab, either the file provided or one of your own.
Reset a single step, a whole task or the entire lab. The environment is rebuilt so you can try again cleanly.
Progress saves after every step. Close the tab and come back later; your files and answers are waiting.
